Rhodes House Wedding Photographer
Sushma and Paul had their Mandap ceremony in the McCall MacBain Hall, Rhodes House and I was their wedding photographer. Rhodes house is a grade II listed building which has enjoyed a storied past from its opening in 1929. As well as a home for Rhodes Scholars it is also an exceptional space for hosting a whole host of events including weddings. A recent renovation has brought it into the 21st century adding more modern amenities sympathetically alongside the more traditional spaces. It feels transformed and refreshed while maintaining all the grand, elegant original features which make it a stunning wedding venue. The photography opportunities are endless from the sweeping staircase to warm, wood-panelled spaces and the exquisitely manicured gardens.
Features of Lains Barn that look wonderful in wedding photographs
Sushma and Pauls Mandap ceremony was in the main hall at Rhodes house, The McCall MacBain Hall. It features a barrel vaulted ceiling, two black marble fireplaces and a raised bay with a south facing view onto the gardens. A mandap ceremony is a Hindu wedding ritual that takes place under a covered structure called a mandap, which took pride of place in the heart of Rhodes House. The bride and groom sat on royal chairs, with their parents by their sides. They looked very regal and I hope my photographs have captured the joy and the sea of colour that their wedding exuded. The ceremony includes a divine fire used by the priest during the ceremony alongside hymns from the Vedas. The couple mentioned that the main reason they chose Rhodes house as their wedding venue was because it was one of the few that allowed a lit flame inside the building. Which is a very important part of the ceremony.

Natural unposed wedding photographs from Rhodes House
I went to an event at Rhodes house years ago as my partner’s grandad used to be the warden there. My partner’s dad and sister grew up roaming the halls and mingling with scholars. I was very intrigued to go back and see it after its recent renovations. It was originally designed by Sir Herbert Baker with influences from Dutch farmhouse, to English country mansion, with the Arts and Crafts movement of the 1900s obvious too. Major development designed by the multi award-winning practice Stanton Williams Architects also includes the stunning glass pavilion in the garden.
