I’ve known Andy for a few years now and I was so thrilled to be given the chance to photograph his wedding to the lovely Johnny. They’ve been together for many years so it was quite a big surprise for Andy when Jonny proposed at his 50^th birthday party. They got married at Islington Town Hall, a venue I’m getting to know quite well. I’d only ever done one wedding in the big circular courtroom but it was my fourth Islington Town Hall wedding. The light is lovely; it streams through the high windows and gives everyone lovely halos, the hallway is beautiful for couple photographs and the stairs up to the rooms make a really nice group photograph spot.

A particularly nice detail from their day was the replacement of flowers and buttonholes with little heart shaped badges they called “ding dongs” for everyone to wear. They each represented a donation to leukaemia research in support of a friend of theirs who is fighting the disease. A symbol of love on their big day, it was beautiful to see them dotted across the room and across all the pictures.

The ceremony was beautiful and then, after a few photographs, everyone jumped onto a couple of Routemaster buses to the lovely Davy’s wine Bar in Greenwich. It was quite fun attempting to get some images on a moving bus, going up and down the stairs. At one point I think I attempted it with two plastic cups of wine to give to the lovely grooms from one of the guests downstairs… I’m not sure how I didn’t spill them!

I was quite daunted by the prospect of Davy’s… I got to go see the venue beforehand and all I could think was ‘It’s a midsummer day and they’ve picked a venue underground with no natural light!’ It turned out it was awesome though, lots of low ceiling to bounce flash off, and it was really them, good food, good wine and a lovely cozy vibe.

I got a lovely message from Andy after I’d given them all their photographs from their wonderful day.
